Facilitation Lesson 2 - 5

3. Warming up (10 min)

Materials:

    - Depends on the activity the student chooses

Aims

  1. Students practice with facilitating a warming up: giving clear instruction and linking the warming up to the topic of the practice lesson
  2. Students practice in offering feedback to peers focused on professional facilitation skills

How

  1. A group of students facilitates a warming up from one of the former practice-lessons.
  2. The rest of the group observes their facilitating qualities

Check:

  1. Is the instruction clear?
  2. Did they keep within time limit?
  3. Did they link the topic of the warming up to the topic of the lesson (key message)
Practice I and Feedback Practice I

4. Practice I (20 min)

Materials:

  1. Facilitation form (preparation)
  2. Observation form facilitation
  3. Materials used during the practice depend on the activity the student chooses

Aims

    - Students practice with facilitating an activity of one of the practice lessons

How

  1. Preparation
    • During the end of the last lesson you already appointed 2 groups of students who would facilitate Practice I and Practice II. Group 1 (the first lesson of the practice lessons) starts. They used the facilitation form to help them prepare their activity.
    • They have now 20 minutes to show their facilitation skills, and apply them to an activity from ‘their practice lesson’ (or part of an activity). This could be a game, role play, discussion or other method.

The rest of the students plays the role of students AND of observers. For that use the ‘observation form’. Divide the class quickly in 4 groups: every group should WSWM-student structure – format practice facilitating lessons focus on one of the 4 categories in observing: 1. Positive attitude towards sexuality; 2. Communication & participatory skills; 3. Norms and values; 4. Practical facilitation skills.

  2. Actual practice
    • The student facilitators have 20 minutes to show their facilitation skills. They should finish after 20 minutes! (this is part of their skill building as well: time keeping).
    • After finishing immediately continue with the feedback (4).
5. Feedback Practice I (10 min)

Materials

The filled out forms from practice I

Aims

Students practice in offering feedback to peers focused on professional facilitation skills

How

  1. First give the student-facilitators from Practice I the opportunity to reflect on their own facilitation skills.
    • Were the satisfied?
    • What were they proud of? What went well?
    • What was difficult? What would they like to improve?

  2. Then ask from each of the 4 observation groups, one student to give feedback. Use these feedback tips:
    • Always start with a positive thing (top), before being critical (tip).
    • Make the feedback practical: can you give a practical tip on how you would improve?

Wrap up

Thank the students for being brave to step in front of the group and show their facilitation skills. This is something the entire class can benefit from. Consolidate the evaluations by shortly summarizing the tips and tops.
