Respecting each other

By the end of this lesson students can:

1. Explain that sex is beautiful and precious and that it should always be safe, consensual and pleasurable for both partners.
2. Mention that no one has the right to disrespect in any verbal or non-verbal way, touch or abuse someone else’s body against his/her will.
3. Mention that a greater self-esteem will help to say NO to sex and resist pressure.

Coerced sex

By the end of this lesson students can:

1. Describe what unwanted sex, sexual harassment, transactional sex, sexual abuse and rape is as well as the consequences and know that it is a criminal act and violation of one’s human rights.
2. Explain that sexual abuse and rape are not immediately acted upon by society due to wrong male dominant values which do not acknowledge that harassment and abuse are violations of human rights.
3. Explain that both girls and boys can experience sexual violence, but girls and women are more vulnerable and more often victims of abuse.
4. Know that perpetrators of sexual violence and abuse are often people from the victim’s own environment and mention two tactics that perpetrators often use.
5. List one situation that may easily lead to sexual abuse and know tactics to prevent and escape these situations.
6. explain the emotional, psychological and physical consequences of coerced sex for the victim, especially when sex is unprotected, which is often the case.

Support

By the end of this lesson students can:

1. Mention one place in the area where to find professional help and support in the case of sexual harassment, abuse, rape and how to support a victim of abuse.
2. Mention one situation in which it might be challenging for someone to say NO to unwanted sex.
3. Explain there are policies and laws in place (e.g. in school, government) to protect everybody against sexual harassment, abuse and violence.
4. Explain that is difficult for both girls and boys to talk about experiences of sexual harassment and abuse due to shame and taboos.

2. Attitude

Respecting each other

By the end of this lesson students can:

1. Acknowledge the right that no one’s body (including their own) can be touched against their will, abused or disrespected verbally or non-verbally.
2. Are convinced that if you love someone you would never pressurize that person, especially not into sexual activities.
3. understand and accept that no one is ever under any obligation to ‘repay’ a gift by performing a sexual act and are aware that accepting a gift could give rise to (sexual) expectations that they do not want to meet.
4. Understand and accept the importance of correctly expressing, interpreting and respecting verbal and non-verbal expressions of saying NO to sex.
5. Understand the importance of trusting their own judgment and intuition in the case of a risky situation or when someone tries to cross their limits.

Support

By the end of this lesson students can:

1. Emphasise that a victim of sexual violation is never to blame and has the right to counselling, treatment and support in order to deal with the physical consequences and emotional trauma.
2. Subscribe that not only the victim of the abuse but also the perpetrator needs support and counselling in order to stop harassment and sexual violence.
3. Emphasise the importance of supporting friends in avoiding situations in which it is challenging to say NO to sex, in handling risky situations and in respecting other people’s wishes and limits, also when gifts have been exchanged.
4. Emphasise the importance of influencing friends to not harass or abuse girls or boys.

3. Skills

Students can:

1. Demonstrate how to communicate their limits verbally and non-verbally and saying NO.
2. Explain step by step how to refuse someone who is pressurizing them into sex.
3. Provide a scenario for what possibilities to use to escape a situation of sexual abuse or situations that may easily lead to sexual abuse.
4. Provide a scenario step by step what to do when being sexually harassed and abused.
